Forced Displacement: Post-Coup Challenges for Chin Refugees in Mizoram
- Download full report (PDF) (904 KB)
Following Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, Chin State became a hotspot of armed resistance and brutal repression. More than 50,000 Chin people fled across the Indian border into Mizoram. This study documents the lived experiences of those refugees, revealing the layers of hardship they now face.
Through in-depth interviews, the research captures stories of displacement, survival, and struggle. Chin refugees in Mizoram face poor housing, lack of formal refugee status, limited livelihood options, language barriers, and ongoing trauma. While local solidarity offers some support, legal and institutional protections remain largely absent.
The report underscores the urgent need for cross-border humanitarian coordination and legal safeguards to ensure Chin refugees are not forgotten or pushed further into precarity.
